Essential Functions: The Assistant to the Mayor – Public Information Officer (PIO) oversees all communications related to the Mayor’s Office and Town Departments in a responsive, detail-oriented manner. This position provides a chance to lead the communication of policy goals for a vibrant small town on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. This position is responsible for working with different departments to help craft and manage communication and digital media efforts. This position offers a fulfilling opportunity in public communication. The position will work with Elected Officials and Administration, or other departments on an as-needed basis, at the direction of the Mayor. Works a 40-hour workweek, with non-traditional hours, with the possibility of nights (specifically the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month for Mayor and Council Meetings), weekends, and holidays – more details during the interview process.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in communications, political science, public policy, public administration, or a related field is preferred. Must maintain a valid Driver’s License with a good driving record; pre-employment and periodic review of Motor Vehicle Records is required. Knowledge of principles and practices of mass communication, including experience with print, radio, television, and social media platforms. Principals of project management. Understanding of municipal government operations. Highly proficient with Microsoft Office, social media platforms, video and photo editing software, and software capable of producing graphics, presentations, posters, documents, or other visual content. Ability to shoot, edit, and post original videos, photos, and audio. Exercise good judgment and attention to detail. Work independently, taking responsibility for self and workload. Plan, manage, and meet project deadlines. Analyze and assess programs, policies, and operational needs and make appropriate judgments. Identify and respond to sensitive community and organizational issues, concerns, and needs. Knowledge of business practices, English, spelling, punctuation, and grammar are required. Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite. The ability to perform basic mathematics and maintain the confidentiality of records and other materials are a must. Work independently, taking responsibility for self and workload. Must possess human relations skills and the ability to communicate and work well with elected and appointed officials, the public, consultants, vendors, outside agencies, and coworkers courteously and tactfully. Must be able to perform duties safely and efficiently as well as set the standard for others.
