Code Enforcement and Zoning Official – Department of Planning and Zoning
FY 2025 Starting Salary Range $25.56 (Grade 10 Step 4) – $28.21 (Grade 10 Step 8)
Essential Functions: The Code Enforcement and Zoning Official is responsible for ensuring compliance with property maintenance, zoning, and building codes while supporting municipal land use and development. This role involves investigating code violations, issuing permits and citations, conducting inspections, and assisting in the Planning and Zoning Department. The position also serves as a backup for the Director of Planning and Zoning and collaborates with various departments to enforce regulations effectively.
Key Responsibilities:
- Investigate and enforce zoning and building code violations.
- Issues violation notices and ensures corrective action is taken.
- Evaluate zoning plans and land use proposals.
- Assist in town planning initiatives, including reviewing ordinances and project management.
- Provide administrative support, including budgeting and reporting.
Education and Experience:
- A high school diploma or general education degree is required, and a bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
- Zoning Inspector and Certified Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector certifications are preferred or must be obtained within one year of hiring.
- Three to five years of experience in zoning, planning, or construction.
- Strong knowledge of building codes, zoning laws, and inspection methods.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills.
This position requires fieldwork, occasional evening meetings, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in enforcing municipal codes and supporting community development efforts.
