Successful Berlin Worcester CARES Event

Over 90 families served by Maryland Food Bank

(April 17, 2018) — Berlin hosted the first Worcester Community Access to Resources Expo (Worcester CARES) event on Saturday, April 14, at the Multi-Purpose Building located at 130 Flower St.

“We are excited to report the event had a total of 122 attendees accessing resources for themselves and their families,” said Town Administrator Laura Allen.  “We were able to provide groceries to over 90 families.  Most of the families were from Berlin.  It was a great way to spend a Saturday, from my perspective,” she added.

This family friendly event featured nonprofit organizations throughout the County creating a one-stop shop for individuals and families looking for support or assistance. Worcester residents had the opportunity to learn all about services they need the most.

The Town partnered with Delmarva Power, Choptank Electric Cooperative, Telamon, Worcester County Department of Social Services, Shore Up!, the Salvation Army, and Worcester Youth and Family to organize the event.

Event organizers would like to thank the 42 organizations who participated: Alliance Inc., Atlantic General Hospital Nutrition Department, Atlantic General Hospital Nutrition Department/Kennedy Krieger, Bathfitters, Berlin Head Start, Chesapeake Health Care, Chesapeake Housing Mission, Chesapeake Utilities & Sandpiper Energy, Choptank Electric Cooperative, Inc., Coastal Hospice & Palliative Care, The Cricket Center, Delmarva Power/Pepco, Delmarva Toastmasters Club, Diakonia, Easterseals, Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay, Habitat for Humanity-Worcester County, Homes at Berlin, Hope4Recovery, Jesse Klump Memorial Fund, Inc., JobCorps, Life Crisis Center, Maryland Insurance Administration, Maryland Legal Aid, Salvation Army, SHORE UP! Event organizers worked with the Maryland Food Bank, Worcester Youth and Family, the Town of Berlin, and Sonrise Church to provide bagged groceries to people attending the event. The remaining food bags were donated to Shore Up for an upcoming event and the Stephenson United Methodist Church Spirit Kitchen and Food Pantry.

“We couldn’t hold this event without the support of our sponsors,” said Town Administrator Laura Allen.  “I want to give a special thank you to Shore Transit, Bayside Gazette, The Dispatch, Choptank Electric and Choptank Electric Trust, Chesapeake Utilities/Sandpiper Energy, Delmarva Power, Ocean 98, Bathfitters, Hope4Recovery, Worcester County Commission on Aging, the Berlin Community Improvement Association, Domino’s Pizza, Subway, Uncle Willie’s, On What Grounds and the Mayor and Council of the Town of Berlin,” she added.
