Born in 1947 and died on September 1, 2017. Hailey served as a councilman for eight years and then as mayor for eight years. During his administration, sidewalks were installed in various locations around town, and significant upgrades were made to Berlin’s electric utilities. During his tenure, two major Hollywood films were also filmed in Berlin: “The Runaway Bride” and “Tuck Everlasting.”
Former Mayor G. Williams stated, “Mayor Hailey…was a strong advocate for providing equitable town services to all neighborhoods [and] during Hailey’s tenure as mayor, he organized urgent renovations to the town hall that modernized the facility but at the same time preserved its historic architecture” (Sharpe, 2017). Hailey oversaw the extension of town water and sewer to Seahawk Road, “providing Stephen Decatur Middle School and Stephen Decatur High School with access to “environmentally sustainable” services. The Town Councilmembers also “fondly recalled Hailey’s penchant for Hawaiian shirts and his love of his red 2002 Ford Thunderbird” (Sharpe, 2017). His wife was Shirley.
