    Administrative Assistant II – Administration Department

    FY2027 Pay Range: Grade 6 Step 2 $20.93/hour to Grade 6 Step 6 $23.10/hour

    Essential Functions: The Administrative Assistant II is a full-time position with a comprehensive benefits package. This position provides administrative support to the Administration Department by performing a wide variety of clerical, technical, and customer service functions that contribute to the efficient daily operations of the Town.

    The work environment is fast-paced and requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, proficiency with various computer programs, and a willingness to learn new software and responsibilities as needed. The successful candidate must be adaptable, able to prioritize multiple tasks, and maintain professionalism while interacting with the public, elected officials, and Town staff.

    Under the direction of the Town Administrator, this position may provide support to elected officials and other Town departments as operational needs require. The regular work schedule is 40 hours per week; however, attendance at evening Mayor and Council meetings is a routine job requirement. Additional evening, weekend, or holiday work may occasionally be required to support Town operations.

    Education and Experience: A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. An associate or bachelor’s degree in business or a related field is preferred. Possession of a Maryland certification as a Notary Public is preferred or can be obtained upon hiring, at the Town’s expense. Preference is given to individuals with upper-level administrative experience, Certified Municipal Clerks or those willing to obtain the certification, individuals with experience working in local government, or individuals with experience working in Human Resources.

    Requirements: Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment. Knowledge of business practices, English, spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite. Types at a minimum speed of forty words per minute. The ability to perform basic mathematics and maintain the confidentiality of records and other materials is necessary. Must possess human relations skills and the ability to communicate and work well with elected and appointed officials, the public, consultants, vendors, outside agencies, and coworkers courteously and tactfully. Must be able to perform duties safely and efficiently and set the standard for others.

    Police Officer

    Police Officer – Berlin Police Department

    Full-time with benefits – Experienced or Cadets

    The Berlin Police Department is accepting applications for full-time police officers. There will be a physical agility test for cadets at the Berlin Police Department. Upon successful completion of the physical test, the written test would follow immediately on-site. The duration of the Police Academy is six months, and they hold two academies per year, one in January and one in July.

    Cadets: The starting salary for cadets is a Grade 7 Step 11 $27.48/hour ($57,096/annually) while in the academy and through successful completion of field training. The salary then increases to a Grade 7 Step 16 $31.05/hour ($64,584/annually). The approved FY 2027 Step and Grade Pay Scale, where you can find the full pay range, is available here. 

    Experienced/Laterals:
    Less than two (2) years of experience – Grade 7 Step 16 $31.05/hour ($64,584/annually).
    Over two (2) years of experience – Grade 9 Step 13 $31.79/hour ($66,123.20/annually).
    10+ years of experience – Grade 11 Step 14 $35.93/hour ($74,734.40/annually).

    Applicants must:

    • Be 21 Years Old.
    • Be a U.S. Citizen.
    • Have a high school diploma or an approved GED.

    • Sick leave (one day a month, no carryover limit).
    • Personal days (two annually).
    • Vacation days based on tenure (6 days in year one, 12 days in years two through five, etc.).
    • Educational benefits (required paid in full by town/non-required 100% reimbursed with contract).
    • Overtime and compensatory leave.
    • Take-home car if approved by the Chief of Police.

    Essential Functions: The Berlin Police Department is accepting applications for both full-time and part-time Police Communication Officers. There is currently only one full-time vacancy available. A Police Communications Officer serves as the critical link between the public and emergency responders by receiving emergency and non-emergency calls, gathering essential information, and dispatching the necessary personnel. They monitor radio communications, coordinate response efforts, maintain accurate records, and provide calm, professional assistance during high-pressure situations. Strong communication skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask are essential to ensuring the safety of both the public and first responders.

    Requirements:

    • Must be flexible with shifts. Full-time staff will be assigned a typical working shift, but may be asked to assist during other shifts as needed. Shifts include day, evening, and midnight. Employees may also be required to work during holidays, inclement weather, or special events.
    • Must be 20 years old or older.
    • Must be a U.S. citizen.
    • Must have a high school diploma or approved GED.
    • Must pass an extensive background check that includes a drug test, criminal history review, check of prior employers, and references, among other requirements.
    • Must be able to complete an entry-level MILES/NCIC logon course certified by CJIS.
    • No experience is required, but it is preferred.
