Essential Functions: The Town of Berlin is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Planning Director. This position is a full-time exempt position with full benefits. The Planning Director plans, directs, coordinates, and administers all activities of the Department of Planning and Zoning on behalf of the Mayor and Council. This position is responsible for supervising and performing regulatory administration of plan reviews, code enforcement, issuance of applicable permits for new construction, repairs and renovations, and other matters, serves as staff to certain Boards and Commissions, and represents the Town and Department before various agencies and the public. This position is responsible for planning for the physical development and growth of the Town of Berlin while maintaining a culture that embraces the Town’s mission, vision, and values.
Education and Experience: Must possess a high school diploma or general education degree and a bachelor’s degree in urban planning, Land Use Planning, Public Administration, Architecture, or a closely related field. Experience may be substituted for educational requirements. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certification is desired or must be obtained within one year of hire. Must maintain a valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record; pre-employment and periodic review of Motor Vehicle Records are required. Pre-employment and periodic background checks are required. The employee will be subject to pre-employment, post-accident, random, and reasonable cause drug and/or alcohol testing.

Administration Department
Pay Range: Grade 6 Step 2 $20.02/hour to Grade 6 Step 5 $21.55/hour
Essential Functions: The Administrative Assistant II is a full-time position with full benefits. They perform various tasks as directed to aid in the daily operations of the Administration Department. The work environment is fast-paced and would require an individual to be skilled in various computer programs and be willing to learn new competencies as needed. The position may be directed to work with Elected Officials or other departments on an as-needed basis and at the direction of the Town Administrator. Works a 40-hour workweek with the possibility of nights, weekends, and holidays.
Education and Experience: A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. An associate or bachelor’s degree in business or a related field is preferred. Possession of a Maryland certification as a Notary Public is preferred but can be obtained upon hiring, at the Town’s expense. Preference is given to Certified Municipal Clerks or those willing to obtain the certification with the Town, at the Town’s expense. Upper-level administrative duties or supervision experience is preferred.
Requirements: Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment. Knowledge of business practices, English, spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite. Types at a minimum speed of forty words per minute. The ability to perform basic mathematics and maintain the confidentiality of records and other materials is necessary. Must possess human relations skills and the ability to communicate and work well with elected and appointed officials, the public, consultants, vendors, outside agencies, and coworkers courteously and tactfully. Must be able to perform duties safely and efficiently and set the standard for others.

Berlin Police Department
The Berlin Police Department is accepting applications for full-time police officers. There will be a physical agility test for cadets at the Berlin Police Department, with the written test to immediately follow upon successful completion of the physical agility.
Cadets: Starting salary for cadets is $21.70/hour ($45,136) while in the academy and through successful completion of field training. Salary then goes to $25.13/hour ($52,270)
Experienced/Laterals:
Less than two (2) years of experience $25.13/hour ($52,270)
Over two (2) years of experience $28.70/hour ($59,696)
Over 10 years of experience $31.01/hour ($64,500)
