American Public Power Association Recognizes Town’s Assistance
(August 24, 2018) — The American Public Power Association (APPA) issued a commendation to Berlin Electric for their mutual aid response last year to the Hurricane Irma recovery in Florida, Mayor Gee Williams announced.
The Town of Berlin sent a crew to Orlando, FL in September 2017 to assist with the Hurricane Irma recovery effort. Electric Utility Director Tim Lawrence, Chief Lineman Alan Parkinson, and Lineman Claude Littleton worked for four days to restore power to residents and businesses served by the Orlando Utilities Commission, the second largest municipal utility in Florida with 246,000 customers.
“The Council and I are grateful to be able to send some of our town’s talented and experienced electric utility crew members to provide much needed help to the residents of Orlando,” said Mayor Williams. “While several crew members were in Florida, key utility employees remained in Berlin. Superintendent Auggie Wienhold, Chief Lineman Jim Higgason, Meter Technician Barry Daniels, Lineman Apprentice Russel Goehringer and Power Plant Operator Casey Webb made sure the lights stayed on in our cool, small town,” he added.
The Town was fully reimbursed for expenses related to the response through a mutual aid agreement approved by the Mayor and Council on September 11, 2017.
