Re-appointed and appointed several Board and Commission members;
Established a formal agreement between the Town and the Berlin Heritage Foundation regarding the Taylor House Museum; and
Declared November as Municipal Government Works Month.

COMCAST GRANT TO WORCESTER YOUTH AND FAMILY COUNSELING

November 25: (r-to-l) Karen Clayland, Xfinity Communities Account Executive, Comcast Beltway Region; Chris Comer, Director, Government & Regulatory Affairs, Comcast Beltway Region; Steve Taylor, Executive Director of Worcester Youth and Family Counseling; Mike Wiley, Chair of the Berlin Parks Commission; and Mary Bohlen, Berlin Deputy Town Administrator. In recognition of the more than 85 volunteers who participated in the April 27, 2019 Berlin Clean-Up Day as part of Comcast Cares Day, a check for $1,689.00 was presented to Worcester Youth and Family Counseling (WYFC). WYFC and the Town of Berlin Parks Commission and Mayor and Council thank Comcast and their affiliates for making the 2019 Clean-Up Day a wonderful success.

DECEMBER IN BERLIN – SAVE THE DATES

Toys for Tots Dropbox: From 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, from now until December 16th you can stop in Town Hall (10 William Street) and drop off an unwrapped gift for a child in need. To read more about what items will be accepted please click here .

Mistletoe on Main Street #Getaroominberlin: See the information below all of the events. The contest will end on January 1, 2020. Good luck!

Classical Christmas: Tuesday, December 3, 2019 from 6 pm – 9 pm at the Calvin B. Taylor House Museum. Gourmet dinner and candlelight concert in museum and Atlantic Hotel. $60 per person.

Berlin Christmas Parade: Thursday, December 5, 2019 beginning at 7 pm on Downtown Main Street. Come celebrate the holiday season as people fill the streets to watch the marching bands, dance teams, fire companies and floats while awaiting the arrival of Santa. This year the stage will be located at the corner of Main Street and Baker Street. Main Street will be closed beginning 5 pm at Buckingham Lane through Harrison Avenue. Shuttle available from Berlin Intermediate School.

Candlelight Tour at the Calvin B. Taylor House Museum : Saturday, December 7, 2019 from 5 pm – 6:30 pm. Docents in period costumes will give tours by candlelight of the down stairs area of the museum.

Second Friday Art Stroll: Friday, December 13th from 5 pm to 8 pm.

Berlin New Year’s Eve Celebration and Ball Drop : The kids ball drop will take place on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 from 5 pm – 6:30 pm with the adult ball drop with music, beer, and wine, food trucks too. 10 pm – 12:30 am on Downtown Main Street. Celebrate the arrival of 2019 in Berlin.

*** As a reminder, pets should always be leashed at Town events and you should always pick up after your pet.

Holidays:

Christmas Eve/Day: Most Town offices will be closed on Tuesday, December 24, 2019 and Wednesday, December 25, 2019 in observation of the Christmas Holiday.

New Year’s Eve/Day: Most Town offices will be closed beginning at noon on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 and all day on Wednesday, January 1, 2020

HOLIDAY DECORATION SAFETY TIPS

Check all holiday light cords to make sure they aren’t frayed or broken. Don’t string too many strands of lights together—no more than three per extension cord.
If are buying an artificial tree, look for the fire-resistant label. When putting it up, keep it away from fireplaces, radiators and other sources of heat.
If getting a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and water it to keep it fresh. Bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off.
If using older decorations, check their labels. Some older tinsel is lead-based. If using angel hair, wear gloves to avoid irritation. Avoid breathing in artificial snow.
When decorating outside, make sure decorations are for outdoor use and fasten lights securely to your home or trees. If using hooks or nails outside, make sure they are insulated to avoid an electrocution or fire hazard.
If using a ladder, be extra careful. Make sure to have good, stable placement and wear shoes that allow for good traction.
Don’t use electric lights on metallic trees.
Don’t forget to turn off all holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house.
Keep children, pets and decorations away from candles.
If hanging stockings on the fireplace mantel, don’t light the fireplace.
Consider using battery operated artificial candles verses real candles.

AS WINTER WEATHER APPROACHES

With colder weather comes unique concerns for potential property damage. Winter weather can cause major property losses, not only from storm activity, but also the impairment of normal public services and other necessary operations. Drifting snow can adversely affect the structural integrity of buildings if permitted to accumulate. Ice storms are also common to the entire state of Maryland. Collapsing of structures is the most common problem with accumulation of ice and snow loads. Frozen plumbing can cause pipes to burst, the resulting water damages account for the greatest number of claims when severe cold temperatures occur.
